Thinking of Becoming a Freemason?

Welcome! If you’re considering joining a Masonic Lodge, there’s a simple process to follow — and don’t worry, you don’t need to know a Freemason to get started.

That’s why this website exists — to help you understand how to become a Freemason. If you’ve already got a sense of what Freemasonry is about, and you’re looking to join a warm, respected, and genuinely friendly Lodge in Progress Lodge, then look no further — Progress Lodge might be just the one for you.

Feel free to get in touch with us here if you have any questions — we’re happy to help.

Who Can Join?

Freemasonry in Port Sunlight and the Wirral area welcomes men from all backgrounds, beliefs, and walks of life. To become a Freemason, you must:

  • Be at least 21 years old
  • Believe in a Supreme Being
  • Have no criminal convictions

Starting Your Journey

Before joining, you’ll want to make sure Freemasonry feels right for you. It does take some commitment — like attending regular meetings and learning about how the Lodge works.

Once you’ve made an enquiry, we’ll invite you to meet us in a relaxed, informal setting. It’s a great chance to ask questions, learn more, and meet a few of the members. Sometimes we’ll also invite you — and even your family — along to a social event so we can get to know each other better.

The Interview

Once we’ve had a chance to meet properly, and you feel that Progress Lodge is a good fit, we’ll invite you to a short interview. There’s no need to be nervous — it’s just part of the official process to make sure you meet the criteria and understand what’s involved in terms of your time and costs.

Becoming a Freemason

If all goes well, our Lodge Secretary will write to you with the date of your Initiation. We’ll let you know what to wear, what the fees are, and give you all the information you need to help make it a special and memorable day.

Your Early Steps in the Lodge

There are three stages as you progress through Freemasonry to become a Master Mason. Don’t worry — you won’t be doing it alone. The members of Progress Lodge will be there to support you, offer guidance, and share their knowledge every step of the way.
